In this article we will cover:

Designed for Today. Built for Tomorrow.

Retail technology moves quickly. Displays change. Digital platforms evolve. Hardware becomes obsolete.

But good engineering lasts.

More than 14 years ago, GAVI Point of Purchase designed and produced the Virtual Bartender Display for Diageo, combining digital interaction, product merchandising and on-demand cocktail information into one integrated retail fixture.

Today, the display still works.

That longevity represents something we believe strongly at GAVI: a retail display should not simply solve today’s merchandising challenge. It should be engineered with the materials, construction and technology integration needed to continue delivering value well into the future.

Bringing the Bartender Experience to the Retail Floor

The Virtual Bartender was developed to turn a traditional liquor display into an interactive shopper experience.

Rather than simply presenting bottles on shelves, the display incorporated a large touchscreen that allowed shoppers to explore cocktail ideas, discover products and interact with Diageo brands directly at the point of purchase.

A built-in printer took the experience one step further, allowing shoppers to print cocktail recipes they could take home.

The result was a display that combined education, inspiration and merchandising in a single retail footprint—helping bridge the gap between digital content and the physical shopping experience.

Digital Technology Meets Physical Merchandising

One of the defining characteristics of the Virtual Bartender Display is the integration of technology directly into the fixture.

The upper housing incorporates the touchscreen, electronics, speakers, promotional graphics and recipe printer while keeping the components contained within a clean, purpose-built structure.

Below the interactive area, multiple merchandising shelves provide substantial capacity for featured spirits while keeping products organized, visible and accessible.

This combination allowed the display to perform two jobs simultaneously: engage the shopper digitally and merchandise the product physically.

That concept may sound familiar today. Fourteen years ago, it was well ahead of the curve.

Engineered as a Complete Retail System

Building an interactive display like this requires much more than mounting a screen to a retail fixture.

The structure has to account for electronics, wiring, ventilation, access for maintenance, printer integration, product weight, shelf loading, shopper interaction and the everyday demands of a retail environment.

GAVI engineered the Virtual Bartender as a complete system, bringing the digital and physical components together within a durable freestanding display.

The metal construction provides the structural foundation needed to support both the technology and a substantial amount of merchandise. Integrated shelving and product-retention rails help keep bottles secure and organized, while the upper enclosure protects the electronic components and creates a polished presentation.

Just as importantly, the design provides a platform that can continue functioning long after the initial retail program has ended.

14 Years Later—and It Still Works

Technology-driven displays can have an inherent weakness: obsolescence.

A display may look impressive when it launches, but if its technology cannot be maintained, serviced or supported, its useful life can be unnecessarily short.

The Diageo Virtual Bartender tells a different story.

More than 14 years after GAVI produced it, the touchscreen system and integrated technology remain operational.

For us, that is more than an interesting piece of GAVI history. It demonstrates the value of thinking beyond the initial installation.

We design and engineer displays that don’t fall into obsolescence.

That means considering durability, serviceability, component integration and long-term usability from the beginning of the design process—not as an afterthought.

Built for Demanding Retail Environments

Retail displays face conditions very different from prototypes sitting in a showroom. Customers interact with them. Products are repeatedly stocked and removed. Fixtures are cleaned, bumped, moved and used day after day.

Interactive displays introduce another layer of complexity because the technology must coexist with those physical demands.

The Virtual Bartender was engineered accordingly, with a durable metal structure, protected electronic components, integrated cable management, accessible merchandising areas and a stable freestanding footprint.

The result is a fixture designed not simply to look impressive at launch, but to perform in the environment where it matters.

Applications Beyond Beverage Retail

The same principles behind the Virtual Bartender can be applied across many retail environments. Interactive displays can help shoppers compare products, explore options, view demonstrations, access technical information, configure products or receive recommendations while standing directly in front of the merchandise.

Potential applications include beverage and spirits, flooring and building materials, consumer electronics, appliances, automotive products, tools and hardware, cosmetics, sporting goods, home improvement products and other categories where education plays an important role in the purchasing decision.

The technology has changed dramatically over the past 14 years. The underlying opportunity has not: help customers make better purchasing decisions at the point of sale.

From Concept to Long-Term Retail Solution

At GAVI Point of Purchase, we approach displays as engineered products.

That means balancing creative design with material selection, manufacturing, structural requirements, technology integration, merchandising needs, installation and the realities of long-term retail use.

The Diageo Virtual Bartender is a great example of that philosophy.

It was innovative when it was produced more than a decade ago. The fact that it remains functional today may be an even stronger testament to the engineering behind it.

Designed for today. Built for tomorrow.

That is what great retail display engineering should accomplish.

Have an Idea That Needs to Last?

Whether your next program calls for a traditional merchandising fixture or a technology-driven interactive experience, GAVI can help take it from concept and engineering through manufacturing and deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Virtual Bartender is an interactive retail merchandising display produced by GAVI for Diageo. It combines a touchscreen experience, printed cocktail recipes and physical product merchandising within one freestanding fixture.

Shoppers can interact with digital content on the touchscreen to explore beverages and cocktail ideas. The integrated printer can then provide a physical recipe for the shopper to take with them.

GAVI produced the display approximately 14 years ago, and its integrated technology remains operational today.

The display uses a substantial metal structure engineered to support electronic components and multiple shelves of bottled products. Its construction was designed around the demands of an active retail environment.

Yes. Interactive displays can incorporate digital screens, touch interfaces and other technologies alongside traditional product merchandising. The specific solution depends on the retailer, environment, shopper experience and objectives of the program.
